Spring Wardrobe Ideas

I admit, I am kind of a celebrity personal style junkie.

However, with the exception of Carey Mulligan and Kirsten Dunst, I avoid stalking celebs via paparazzi photos. Those two dress too deliciously to resist a creeper-esque peep when inspiration itches. Instead, I comb my Google and Bing image searches for dressed down vintage stars. These often prove hard to come by, but they are there. Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, or Natalie Wood stripped from their iconic glamour in exchange for something more simple equals magic. Here, cropped trousers, cardigans, ballet flats, big sunglasses, and dresses appear, with some jewelry for kicks.

I love these looks. The make their point without fuss. They exude fashion without trying. Rather, they just are. I decided I should look like that this spring. My Minneapolis lifestyle rarely accommodates outfits decked with bells and whistles. For one, I rarely wear stilettos anymore. But I need to edit my wardrobe so it becomes more "me" and less faux-urbanista. I am Idaho. Let's be real.

This, however, I can handle.

Just ... minimal.

Hey dolls

Well, I thought I rented a studio apartment for one in Minneapolis, but I found three lovely ladies to room with at the last minute!

The end two are 1990s reproductions of vintage Barbies, (I thought they were SO much prettier than the modern ones) but the center one is actually an original "Midge." The first owner, my mom, handed her down to me almost twenty years ago! I may have been a little young at the time to have such a special gift, because I think I destroyed her original outfits. She's wearing one I designed and made at some point during my childhood. 

Isn't she lovely? And apparently, Mattel created an entire life story for her! Read about it, here. I think that is pretty funny. I used to just made up my own stories for her.

I am decorating my place with a few other vintage icons, so I decided to pack all three to see if I could fit them somewhere. I admit, I still get really excited about Barbie dolls. I credit my appreciation for fashion and clothes to the many hours I spent playing with them back in the day. Not to mention, I find this beyond flattering:

I bought some new vintage clothes recently that I love and want to share. My camera needs either a photographer or tripod to take outfit photos, so hopefully one day you will actually see me wearing these. I wish I could remember to just pick up a tripod, but whenever I have extra spending money, I always put it toward what I normally get: clothes, music, or books.

I got these orange, high-waisted '70s Levis at my favorite antique store. I like them because of the color, and they are not overly wide-legged.

The next three came from probably my favorite Etsy shop, Lola Vintage. I found this shop about a year ago, and ordered two jewel-toned, '80s cocktail dresses. It made me appreciate '80s clothes more than I previously did because its clothes are so beautiful.

Oh, and finally, isn't this cute? I just found these effects (comical, considering I have owned my Mac for almost a year), and I love the idea of using them to make future outfit photos more vintage-looking.

Vintage Sparkly Jacket

 My favorite antique store had a whole rack of sparkly jackets, tops, and sweaters displayed when I visited last Tuesday. Since I was Christmas shopping, I wanted to pick a couple up for gifts, except I never know what vintage clothes others will like. However, I decided I could work this jacket for the holidays. It goes with everything I have, which surprises me. Sequins are kind of my fashion guilty pleasure, but I never feel I can wear them just out and about with a regular outfit.

Oh, many of you may know this, but Blake Edwards, the director of the Pink Panther franchise, and one of my favorite movies, Breakfast at Tiffany's passed away yesterday. The New York Times included this obituary.  Rest in peace.
