Honestly, I did fine for many years without Netflix. I only succumbed because my neighborhood rental store closed down, and the library's selection alone seem a bit ... dissatisfying. I mean, it's important to support local libraries, but I can only watch those movies so many times.
Now, as I browse though this expansive online catalog, add films to my queue, and view them as they arrive (so far, The Big Lebowski, Orphan, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, and classy gigs like A Single Man and Wonder Boys) I feel like this is all "cool." However, I miss the intimacy my previous set-up provided, the employees' suggestions, the deli smell from next door, and the disturbing, plastic-wrapped pickles in the candy section. This, on the other hand, is me on a computer. What's new?
Don't get me wrong. I like Netflix a lot so far, and would recommend it to anyone who regularly watches movies. This just signals one more isolating act, and commitment to something other than real people. Then again ... it's an adjustment.

And you picked a great subject: movies are my favorite art-medium. I've thought about film-blogging myself but, for now, will live vicariously through you. :)
I joined NetFlix five years ago because the selection at local video-stores was so silim: mostly just multiple copies of lousy blockbusters. Now, NetFlix killed Blockbuster (which is in bankruptcy) and smaller stores so there really isn't any competiton.
After exhausting current releases, I try older, independent or foreign films. I've seen hundreds in NF's deep collection. I recommend them to you for their innovation, experimentation and novelty. Plus, if you miss getting store-clerk recommendations, NF's algorithms produce noteworthy results.
for me netflix is really my only alternative as far as renting goes. where i live there are NO video stores within reasonable distance and even the closest libraty with dvd's is over 30 minutes away and just like you said the selection is quite limited. Do you not have TCM???
i agree though, its just one more thing that removes us from contact with real people. nowadays people end relationships with a text message!

I love netflix actually. If Im looking for something to watch and nothing it on, I just check out their watch instantly. I can see what you mean though about missing the video store experience.
